About this deal

Especially as this will enable you to fully grasp the subtle yet thrilling sense of unease that this latest novel ends with. Louise verzamelt enkele betrouwbare bemanningsleden en als kapitein van d’Oude Maen gaat ze het gevecht aan tegen de zeerovers rond de Canarische eilanden. Fantastic to have such a strong, brave female protagonist and to set much of the tale at sea was genius, adding a very different dimension. As with the other women in her family, Louise is a formidable character: bold, fearless and with a will of iron.

It shows another bad side to slaves the taboo side that nobody talks about the Italy, France, Dutch white slaves torched viable filth and urinal shit and blood disgusting side. Later, she and her crew begin to hunt down the pirates sailing the Barbary Coast to liberate those enslaved during their raids. Much of the novel takes place on board ship, where murder, storms and pirates mirror Louise’s inner torments. From the ending I know the next book will likely tell us the rest of Louise's story but because of this it feels more like a book to take us between stories, travelling with the ship to take the characters to the next setting. We see some mention of Minou, her sister Alis, Alis's companion Cornelia, and Minou's daughter, Barnarda (who is unfortunately quite unpleasant).Uit haar vorig werk weten we dat ze een uitgebreide kennis heeft over Zuid-Frankrijk, Katharen en Hugenoten. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Yet another banger from Kate Mosse and although part of trilogy series, can be enjoyed as a standalone novel.

Also the prologue/intro is repeated in full when it comes up as the start of the climax of the story which was a little odd.De kust rond Las Palmas heeft te kampen met piraterij, waarbij steeds meer mensen gevangen genomen worden en als slaven verkocht worden. This is the third book in The Joubert Family Chronicles and is full of adventure that takes you to France, the Netherlands and The Canary Islands.

Choosing a female main character for this time period is an incredibly difficult feat and Mosse not only rose to the challenge, but she succeeds in creating an emotional attachment to not just Louse but also Gilles. This is a novel that is both thrilling and sensitive, romantic and brutal – one that you can really get your teeth into. When the worst happened and Louise found herself cornered by those who despised her, her life in danger, the loyal Giles stepped up.

She is a sixteenth century hero with the modern flair thrown into the story to give it a very different type of story. And then there is the emotive story of Gilles, a child unprotected from his abusive mother, yet through love and kindness, overcomes so much, and along with Louse bravely defies the dangerous hypocrisy of the Spanish Inquisition. The first 100 or so pages were incredibly slow and the book never seemed to gain momentum even when the main characters were at last at sea. Appositely placed in the past – this compelling tale of women on a mission to be seen and heard is a tale for today. Louise's wealth protects her from most things, and unladylike is certainly a word she would embrace.I still very much enjoyed it and it was unlike anything I've read before, a 17th century female captain makes for a fantastic character and now that this book has set Kate Mosse up for her next work I am excited to see how the Reydon-Joubert and Evreux families cross over again.
