About this deal

Anyway…if you and Jeff want to see sharp…get your hands on one of those new SamYang/Rokinon SP 14mm f/2.

This is going to look familiar to some of you, mainly because it's virtually the same words I used for handling on my review of the 12-100mm f/4 Pro lens! All in, I think that shooting ultra wide angles can be a lot of fun, but pose unique compositional challenges. In essence, pulling the corners in from 7% to 1% is a lot of pixel pushing in an area that is probably already struggling.

A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and colour fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. Autofocusing is never going to be a huge challenge for an ultra-wide lens, and as you’d expect the Olympus 7-14mm f2.You may have to work a little harder to direct your viewer’s eye through your scene to get it to where you want it to end up. It's difficult to say exactly how good the corners really are, though, because this lens has very significant field curvature at 7mm (but ignorable at 14mm, I think). There is no denying the lens’ quality and with its great handling and solid build, it deservedly sits in our selection of Best Micro Four Thirds lenses. I’d only suggest using f/8 for squeezing a tiny smidgen more DOF out of it, or if absolutely needing to eat another stop of light. I illustrated this in my OMD EM1 review where the same composition shot with the Lumix GX7 revealed the same flare artefacts in the same positions, but with a different intensity / colour.

Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this blog’s author and/or owner is strictly prohibited. It can be of great use for architectural shots depending on how well the perspective distortion is contained.Panasonic users should note that there’s no optical image stabilisation, because Olympus uses in-body systems instead.

However, the front element does not extend beyond the end of the body of the lens – the lens remains the same size, albeit the front element simply extends outward (not beyond the lens hood). Based in Surrey, UK, Michael Rammell is a professional wedding photographer shooting exclusively with Olympus Micro Four Thirds cameras. For me, a 35mm field of view (on full frame) is just about perfect for normal, everyday documentary shooting (perhaps a 24mm lens on an APS-C) but for certain work applications, I do need a wider angle to get interior shots in, and the like. This model measured 87x120mm and weighed 780g, making it larger and heavier than the new Olympus 7-14mm f2. His leading leg is probably a mere couple of feet from the camera, but even the small difference between it and his trailing leg shows how much a difference a foot or two can make (I can confirm that both of his legs are relatively equal in length).
