In general, these wrenches are not advised for high torque situations since the engagement with the fastener when the ball end is used is diminished when using this form of the wrench. A: In 1909-1910, William G. Allen patented a method of cold-forming screw heads around a hexagonal die. The first trademarked hex key in the US was made by Allen Manufacturing and the name has been used ever since. From RS PRO, this high-quality T-handle hex key set is a handy way to keep differing allen key sizes all in one place. The rubberised t-handles ensure that applying torque is easy and efficient, and the range of sizes means you're fully prepared for precision hex driving applications.

How would you use a long reach hex key?

Non-sparking designs – While most Allen™ keys use an alloy steel or tool steel material in their fabrication, there are options available that utilize Beryllium Copper in lieu of steel. The Beryllium Copper material will not create sparks if the tool accidentally slips and strikes another metal surface. The non-sparking feature of this material makes these types of Allen™ wrenches suitable for use in applications where the presence of flammable gases or combustible liquids might exist. We use Allen key or Hex key (Allen keys or Hex keys - two are same but name is different in different countries) for Allen bolts, CSK bolts, Button Head bolts and Grub screw (Set screw). Allen key / Allen wrench/ Hex key: Allen bolt is a type of bolt which has cylindrical head having hexagonal bore in it. The tool used for handling this bolt is called Allen key or Hex key. Here Allen key or Hex key mentions the same tool. Ball-end Allen keys – The ball head Allen key is one of the more distinctive types of Allen Key available. They are distinguished by the presence of a hexagon-shaped ball at the driving end of the tool. Allen wrenches of this sort are available in two different types: L-shaped and T-shaped designs. Size and weight – Allen™ keys tend to be smaller and lighter than the equivalent tools used to apply other fastener types, making them easier to carry. This can be an advantage for applications where mobility is important such as with cyclists that might want to carry a bike tool kit along on a ride.

Pressure points – the hex design of the Allen™ screw distributes force from the tool against 6 surfaces compared with 4 for the Phillips head screw and 2 for the slotted screw. This makes it easier to loosen or tighten these fasteners and can make it less likely to strip or damage a fastener while loosening or tightening. In standard measurements, the most common Allen wrench sizes and bolts for common tasks are 5/32-inch, 3/16-inch, and ¼-inch sizes. What Size is a T40 Allen key? The Allen wrench comes from the mid-1900s and has become the standard for what we know as a hex key. The Allen Manufacturing Company is a registered trademark and created a set of quality hexagonal wrenches, which are standard and metric sizes, where Allen key sizes in mm are common. Allen™ wrenches or Allen™ keys are generally available in several different styles or types. The most common Allen™ wrench type is the one mentioned earlier – the L-shaped hex key – but there are other variations that incorporate different handle designs, utilize different materials, or add special features. A summary of the most common Allen™ wrench types is found below:
