About this deal

The garda superintendent added: "We are dealing not just with the parents of the three children, but parents of the wider group that would have seen and potentially be traumatised as a result of what happened this afternoon. A guard standing outside a sportswear shop with all its windows smashed and little mountains of trainers piled up at the badly damaged doors said that the violence had “absolutely nothing to do with stabbing, that’s for sure. It had a lot more to do with this”, he said gesturing towards the trainers piled up in the doorway behind him. On Thursday night a helicopter hovered overhead as police in riot gear used shields and batons to clear a crowd down O’Connell Street, Dublin’s main thoroughfare. At the other end, by O’Connell Bridge, flames rose from the remains of a bus and a car.

Police Commissioner Harris said 13 shops were damaged or looted, 11 police cars damaged and destroyed along with three buses and a tram. Then when it descended into the violence it was just unbelievable. That the terrible thing. We’re all mourning the terrible events shot, and then suddenly it’s all about a mob which were absolutely appalling.” Arnotts Department store on Henry Street, which was looted during the riots last night, reopened for business at noon and would remain open until 6pm, Mr McDonald said. Mr Ó Ríordáin called on the Department of Education and the HSE to ensure that appropriate trauma supports and other interventions are made available to the school community. Ireland’s police chief said on Friday that 34 people were arrested over the riots. Of those, “32 … will be appearing before the courts this morning,” Police Commissioner Drew Harris said at a press conference. That appeared to be a slight change in stance from earlier when Geraghty said police were keeping an open mind in terms of the investigation but were “satisfied there is no terrorist link”. The Rotunda Hospital, which had advised against travelling to the hospital on Thursday “unless necessary” due to the unrest, said patients who had an appointment on Friday should come in as scheduled.

Late morning: A man in his 40s or 50s is seen “hanging around” in Rutland Place, a laneway behind Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire, a primary school on Parnell Square East. Earlier this year the school celebrated work getting underway on a long-awaited new school building at an event attended by Minister for Education Norma Foley and Minster for Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe. While crowds gathered at the scene of the burned-out busses and trams, and at other junctions where the clean-up was ongoing phones held high, it was much quieter near the Garden of Remembrance where three children and their carer were stabbed yesterday afternoon.Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe, in whose Dáil constituency the stabbings took place, said: “I am aware of an extremely serious incident that has taken place at Parnell Square in my constituency of Dublin Central. Without thinking, I just took across the road to help out,” she told the Irish national broadcaster RTE. However, the scenes we are witnessing this evening in our city centre cannot and will not be tolerated. The woman, in her 30s, is being treated for serious injuries at the Mater Hospital, while the man, in his 50s, is also being treated, though the statement only identified that he was at “a hospital in the Dublin region”. Eyewitnesses included relatives of those who died in the Stardust, many of whom attend the inquests daily. Some had been getting fresh air and smoking cigarettes at the entrance to the Pillar Room, just across from where the incident unfolded.

A boy, also aged five, and a girl (6) sustained less serious injuries and were brought to CHI Crumlin for treatment. The boy has since been discharged. I would definitely describe the atmosphere as intimidating and febrile. It’s gangs of young people, mainly men, wearing face masks and balaclavas. The Wide Streets Commission was established in 1757 at the request of Dublin Corporation to govern architectural standards on the layout of streets, bridges and buildings (see Dublin streets map). In 1759, the founding of the Guinness brewery resulted in a considerable economic gain for the city. For much of the time since its foundation, the brewery was Dublin largest employer. St Stephen Green is adjacent to one of Dublin main shopping streets, Grafton Street, and to a shopping centre named for it, while on its surrounding streets are the offices of a number of public bodies and the city terminus of one of Dublin Luas tram lines. So I took across the road and there was fellas there and they pulled the guy off the children. There was a good few kids.” The children were “between the ages of four, five and six, no older” and were “only just after finishing school”. At around 1.30pm on Thursday, a person knifed a woman and the three young children aged between five and six outside the Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire primary school in the city centre.Asked if she failed to prepare sufficiently, she said: “This is not a large faction of our society. This is a relatively small group of people whose sole focus is to wreak havoc . . . This is not about immigration, this is not about the young children who are in hospital this evening, these are criminals these are thugs. This is not about people feeling safe or being safe, these are criminals and thugs.” A boy, also aged five, and a girl aged six years, sustained less serious injuries and were brought to CHI, Crumlin, for treatment. The boy has since been discharged.

I spotted a guy with a stabbing motion across the road and people screaming, so I look across the road and there was fellas there and they pulled the guy off the children. There was a good few kids. They were only just after finishing school. I’d say they were between the ages of four, five and six. No older.” Supt Geraghty said that a male in his 40s is a person of interest in the investigation. Gardaí are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital requested that the public “do not visit the hospital at this time”. Restrictions at the hospital would be in place from Friday for 72 hours, it said. “The only visitors who will be allowed on campus are those who are visiting patients in critical care, vulnerable young adults, psychiatry patients or those whose loved ones are receiving end-of-life care,” it said. He said the adult male “is also being treated for serious injuries at a hospital in the Dublin region. The scene remains sealed off and a technical examination of the scene is ongoing.Staff at the all-Irish school, located at No 4 Parnell Square, declined to comment on Thursday afternoon.
