About this deal

They did that by using an o-ring or an X-ring, the only real difference between them is the seals are applied to the pin and they sit between the grey and brass colored links sealing up the cavity. Some of my colleagues have migrated to using wax-based drip lubes (after much chiding from me), but no one else has yet fully converted to my waxy religion. Bulldog BDX was a surprise as it’s an all-purpose spray. It did well in my corrosion protectants test, and while it is a penetrating spray, it didn’t creep past the O-ring in my test rig. For a motorcycle to move forward it has a drive system that transfers engine power to the rear wheel. Although belt and shaft drives are out there, the chain drive has always been the most popularly used by motorcycle manufacturers. A motorcycle with a chain drive has many advantages, like its low cost and ability to efficiently transfer power to the rear wheel. However, by nature, motorcycle chains require a lot of maintenance. One of the most important steps in maintenance is using lubricants.

Thread the chain on to your J-bend tool, and put it in a heat-proof container. Cover it with boiling water and gently agitate it. The hot water will melt away the wax, taking any contaminants with it. Your chain must be properly cleaned before wax lube is applied, or else it won’t be able to penetrate the rollers or dry properly, leading to an inevitable build-up of dirty gunk. Colin Levitch / Immediate Media Budget-conscious cyclists ought to consider the full cost of maintaining a drivetrain when making lube purchasing decisions, though. Wax, on the other hand, is more of a protective measure. It creates a barrier against water and dirt, which can help to extend the life of your chain. Reason five: Chain lube can help protect from corrosion; this doesn’t just keep it looking better – if rust builds up on the inside faces of the plates, this again will cause damage to the O-rings that protect that factory-fitted grease. This frequency will vary depending on how often you ride, and what kind of conditions you’re riding in. If you live in a wet climate or do a lot of off-road riding, you may need to wax more often. There are many different types of bicycle-specific lubes, including wet lubes, dry lubes, ceramic lubes and wax lubes. Each has its own pros and cons, and intended use, which we’ll come on to. I used to get confused between lube and wax but after testing them both in different conditions I found as a rule of thumb you can think of chain lube like WD40 as one of your dry whether lubricant for all conditions and wax for wet weather conditions. Dumonde Tech Original Bicycle Chain Lube is a go-to with many mountain bikers and cyclocross racers. It's one of the few chain lubes that can stand up to the worst conditions. Functioning as a liquid plastic, this chain lube undergoes polymerization to form a strong plating that helps your chain stay cleaner, quieter, and last longer. It's available in the original, full-strength formula shown here as well as a lighter version called Dumonde Tech Light. We've found the more viscous, original formula is the better choice for bad weather and gritty conditions. It’s also relatively easy to apply and doesn’t attract dirt and grime like some other types of lubricants. Wax lube can be applied in two different ways: wet or dry. Many cyclists prefer to apply wax lube when the chain is dry, as it’s easier to work with and less messy.

Look around any important race and you’ll likely see a few immersive waxed chains. This one has a healthy dusting of extra PTFE powder to further reduce friction. Ben Delaney / Immediate Media We wouldn’t recommend it – it’ll attract way too much road crud which will work its way into your chain and prematurely wear it out. One user found that when they “rode through dust, dirt, mud, water, forest debris, and sand…The chain came out looking untouched and new on the bike.” Another buyer added, “My chain has never been cleaner.” The key with bicycle chain lubrication is to get it in the internals of the chain ( among the rollers and pins). Before lubricating, you also need to clean it as thoroughly as possible, to remove contaminants.Recently, partly thanks to the increased availability of independent testing data, waxed-based lubricants have risen in popularity among performance-minded cyclists.
